The Resale Guide: what sells, what we donate, what we recycle.

Thirteen categories, from furniture and appliances to art, electronics and sports gear, each split into resale, donate and recycle. Use it to decide what to send our way, and what to expect once it's gone.

Resale basics

Four things that explain almost every appraisal.

Most items are worth less than you think

Used items, especially furniture, usually sell at a 50–80% discount from the retail price. That is normal, and it is still better than a landfill.

Online listings are not prices

Anyone can list an item for any price. When we appraise, we look at actual closed transactions for the same piece.

We look for market demand

An item is resellable when people are actively shopping for it: in-style, branded, or unique pieces in good condition.

Our resale thresholds

We generally accept for resale large items with an expected resale value above $200 and small items above $50. Below that, items are donated or recycled.

Questions

About resale and donation.

How do you decide what gets resold?
Three things: brand, condition and the current resale market for similar items, with the item's age and our current inventory also considered. A dedicated internal team reviews every item. Our Resale Guide lists what we usually accept for resale, donation or disposal.
What happens to donated items?
We partner with local and national donation organizations that collect from our warehouse. If you'd like a specific charity to receive your items, tell us and we'll do our best. Once donated, you receive a receipt for a possible tax deduction.
How does the recycling part work?
Items that can't be sold or donated go to local recycling centers, where they're separated into categories like scrap metal, electronic waste and reclaimed wood so they can be repurposed. Only items that can't be recycled are disposed of. Recycling fees run $0.60 to $1.50 per cubic foot depending on the market.
